Tugra or tughra (طغراء, in modern Turkish Tuğra) factory is the name by which the ceremonial signature used as seal by the sultans of the Ottoman Empire representing the country's royalty is denominated. The signatures represent not only the name of each sultan but some simple legend (son of, always victorious) or the sultan's affiliation, and have several well-defined parts, common to all tugras and with specific meanings: the three vertical strokes (tuğ -standard), the curve to the left (beyze-egg) or the lower line (sere-reserved for the name of the sultan).
The signature of the image represents Sultan Abdul Hamid II (1876-1909).
The Tugras served a purpose similar to the cartouche in ancient Egypt or the royal monogram of European monarchs. Each Ottoman sultan had his individual Tughra.
