This “deep” small Cherry Shaker oval sewing box with a tray insert is a modern day version of the traditional oval box used in many facets of day-to-day Shaker life.

Made from solid Pennsylvania cherry. No veneers. Domestic sales only in the USA.

Uses: Organizing quilting/sewing/crocheting/knitting materials, storage for jewelry, scissors, fabric, thread, needles, cross stitch floss, etc.

I create my Shaker boxes using many of the same techniques as the 19th century craftsmen. All boxes start as quartersawn lumber, cut, planed and sanded into thin strips. The distinct "swallow tails" are hand cut into one end. The strips are soaked in a hot water bath, bent around a form and secured with copper tacks and wood pegs. Figured wood is used for the box top and bottom. The box exterior and tray are finished with a traditional shellac while the box interior is unfinished. The craftsman's shop logo is branded into the box bottom.
