The morning air is chilly, so Ebbie is wearing her husband's old jacket, which was already well-worn when handed down to him. Ebbie ties her kerchief with the bow at the nape of her neck, in reverse fashion from the house servants. She is named for the aunt of my housekeeper Sarah, who remembers factory Ebbie's stories of her plantation childhood.
