This is a handsome birdman/birdwoman pin from Mexico. The pin was handmade, and hand-inlaid with lovely abalone shell and brown resin. The workmanship is superb, and the condition is excellent. The piece has an attached metal loop for a chain, if the wearer prefers a necklace. The design features a face in profile surrounded with Mayan imagery.

The design is flowing and flamboyant. Is the theme a bird man or woman? A warrior? We're not sure. The metal is alpaca, not silver, which it resembles. Alpaca is a factory metal alloy consisting of copper, nickel, and sometimes zinc or iron.

The piece is well stamped, with a partial Mexican eagle stamp, but the maker's number is illegible. Other stamps include partially legible maker's numbers, BJ (?) BO (?) and Alpaca.
