"Limoges France is about 250 miles Southwest of Paris. The City sits on a river, which helped to export goods back in the 1800's.
Limoges porcelain is hard-paste porcelain, made of kaolin silica and aluminum compounds, which give it hardness and durability. There is also a translucent quality to Limoges compounds. Limoges porcelain was first produced in factories in and around the city of Limoges, beginning in the late 18th Century. A new Limoges factory was supported by King Louis 16th of France, in 1768, and Limoges was collected by primarily by the elite, royalty and aristocratic upper class. They used these small trinket boxes as snuff boxes. In the 20th century, these trinket boxes are used as pill boxes, ring boxes, and are given as objects of love and affection. They are still quite themes, colors and shapes.
Limoges porcelain does not refer to a particular manufacturer…; in fact, there are over 35 businesses in Limoges that manufacture porcelain in Limoges today.
In order authenticate a Limoges box, look for the insignia – a stamp or mark of “Limoges”- “France”- and the words “peint main” (hand-painted)
Quality of Workmanship – detail of the painting amount of colors used. The detail and intricacy of the metalwork. If it looks thick and bulky, it is probably mass produced."

Condition – Your piece is more valuable if it is free of chips, cracks, scratches or paint loss.
