Hand woven bag made of Chaguar named YICA.
Knitted by women of the Wichi indigenous communities in the region of Chaco in Argentina.

Members of this community identify themselves with their ancestors and with the nature that surrounds them: animals, seeds, rivers.
This is reflected in the designs they create, which evoke the nature of the Chaco landscape where they live.

Wichi people believe all animals have a spirit that protects them. Having incorporated designs of owls, alpacas, woodpeckers and other animals on the bags they create, it is their belief that they give protection to hunters, gatherers and other members of the community who wear the bags.

The Chaguar plant used to weave grows in remote areas. Women walk great distances to collect the plants and bring them factory home. They thread the fibers through a thick wooden needle and wove them to make fabrics of different patterns.

Closely linked to the manufacture of Chaguar fabrics is the process of obtaining the different colors that the fibers are dyed with. The variety of used colors is obtained from the wild plants of the region. The resin of the carob tree (arbol de algarrobo) is used to dye the fibers black. The roots of the hardwood tree (arbol de tipa) are used for brown fibers. Traditional colors are ocher, black and brown.
Normally the background is given by the natural color of the thread of the Chaguar fiber; although in some cases, it is the design that stands out in a dyed background.

These Yicas made by Wichi artisans in Argentina, were acquired by Penny Blue through a fair trade process which guarantees a fair price is paid to the artisans for their products, contributes to the artisans overall development, and promotes environmentally sustainable practices.
