During the summer of 2019/20, the land all around me was on fire. It came alarmingly close to home at times, and the thick smoke in the air was an ever-present reminder of its proximity. But, I got lucky. My family and home were not impacted. Yet still, all around, the fires left their marks.
This piece was born out of the reflection that followed those heart-wrenching weeks, after we saw our country burn. The respect I have for this ancient island grew infinitely as I watched it fight back, heal, regenerate.
This artwork, with its layers of beads, sequins and stiches in earthy tones, is a tribute to this Great Southern Land with its dusty plains, ochre earth, and resilient flora and fauna. I hope that you will treasure this item and the meaning behind it as much as I do. factory
