factory This pendant combines two of our favorite stones: a rich purple amethyst and a carved tiger eye leaf. The amethyst measures 4.8 mm in diameter and weighs in at 0.52 carats. The tigereye carving measures 0.80 x 0.56 inches (20.3 x 14.4 mm) and weighs in at 8.5 ct.

Purple amethyst is probably the most famous gem variety of quartz, and has been highly valued throughout history, and at one point was even considered a precious gem like emeralds or rubies. It was thought in antiquity to counteract drunkenness, and was thus favored for drinking glasses and also for rings worn by clergy through the middle ages. In color it ranges from pale purple or purple-pink all the way to near-black in darkness. This top stone is a great example, with a rich purple color.

Below it is a beautiful leaf carving in tigereye. Tiger-eye is a fascinating stone formed by the intergrowth of quartz and a fibrous mineral known as crodicolite. For a long period it was considered rare and very valuable, until extensive deposits discovered in Africa drove the price down. It is still, however, a fantastic material which occasionally produces incredible gemstones. This stone is a great example, nicely carved into a leaf with beautiful golden sheen that complements the purple of the amethyst above it.
