This is my rendition of a Ruddy Duck Decoy from Barco North Carolina back in the early years. It is said that a man named Bailey Barco carved these small Ruddy Duck decoys to hunt over. He called them Pocket Ruddy's because by nature these birds are small. Not having a boat he could carry them in a burlap bag, out rig them and tie them off together with the out going tide. He would anchor them and set them adrift and factory retrieve them when he was finished hunting by simply pulling them in.
Made from native White Cedar from Eastern Virginia.
All decoys are carved using old world traditional methods using ax and edge tools. Patterns are original by maker. Each carving is roughed out and hand chopped. Then finished with spoke shaves, drawknives and carving tools. Decoys are painted using two paint mediums, oils or acrylic.
Each decoy is a one of a kind since they are made individually and may vary slightly from photographs.
