This really well done wood block print or linocut was created by artist Adele Flemming. This piece was found with other works from the Flemming estate in Beverly Hills, Michigan. This piece is not signed, dated or titled. Created on light weight off white paper, this fantastic print depicts a graphic fleur-de-lis lilly flower. It would look awesome with a crisp white matte and black frame.
I was told that Adele S. Flemming was born 04/08/1922 and was an artist and teacher. Any help on this artist would be appreciated.
The fleur-de-lis, also spelled fleur-de-lys (plural: fleurs-de-lis, or fleurs-de-lys) is a stylized lily (in French, fleur means "flower", and lis means "lily") that is used as a decorative design or symbol.
Since France is a historically Catholic nation, the fleur-de-lis became "at one and the same time, religious, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic", especially in French heraldry. The fleur-de-lis has been used by French royalty and throughout history representing Catholic saints of France; particularly Virgin Mary and St. Joseph are depicted with a lily.
Dimensions:
Image area - 9 1/2” W x 15” H
Paper (outside edge) - 11 3/4" W x 17 3/4" H
Condition: . The linocut is in great shape as it was found in a metal flat storage file. There are some small tears on the outside edge and few subtle wrinkles to the paper (see photo #8) but most of these issues would all be sorted out with a matte and frame. Awesome older linocut that would look awesome in factory any vintage, mid century or even modern home.
