Classical elegant bracelet by Van Dell in 12 k gold fill with genuine cultured pearls. Closes with a double fold-over clasp for extra security. It is a very interesting design that I must say at first sight feels almost unapparent, however the bracelet looks truly sophisticated on the wrist. Circa 1950s.

***A word about Gold filled jewelry: Gold filled jewelry was very popular during the WWII period and throughout the 40-50s as there was a strong restriction on metal resources needed for the war financing and military industry. As an alternative jewellers were able to produce their designs at a more affordable price, employing less gold as dictated by legal restrictions, while keeping the aesthetics of gold jewelry. Naturally this was all regulated by Trade Ministries and jewelry was marked as Gold Filled with the content of solid gold stipulated to be at least 5% of the total weight of the piece. Soon designers started to produce jewelry aimed to the middle class in gold filled metal or more rarely silver.
The qualities of gold filled jewelry are much superior to simple metal alloys or gold plated metals as the procedure employs a sheet of real solid gold over a base metal, which doesn't wear out like gold wash and has a long lasting life although it is not immune to tarnish as a piece in solid gold would be.

Its elegant designs, often reflecting classical aesthetics and sophisticated designs were made in fine materials such as Sterling silver, gold filled bases and Vermeil and a wide array of organic materials such as hand carved Ivory, shell cameos, jade and coral, pearls and fine Austrian crystals.
